Poetry

By Sina Oshaghi

Four lines, nowhere to hide

The rubai gives you no room to be approximately right.

A long poem can carry a weak line; it gets absorbed. Four lines cannot. Everything is load-bearing, and a word that is nearly the right word is visible from across the room.

That is why I keep going back to the form. It is the most efficient way I know of finding out whether I actually meant something.
