About

Returning to the word

I have spent more than four decades of my life experiencing, learning, and sharing what I have learned with others.

Born Farvardin 1359, Tehran · From a family originally of Khuzestan
Arash Rezvani in a two-tone woven hat and round glasses, looking straight into the camera, a dark bookshelf behind him.

The word

Everything begins, for me, with the word. Writing has been one of the oldest companions of my life. From books and articles to poetry. Writing is more than a profession to me. It is a way of keeping experiences from being lost.

One way of looking, many forms

None of them has taken the place of another. Each has gone on alongside the rest — here each is a single line, and a way through to the page that says it more fully.

  1. A stack of copies of his translated motorcycling book on a dark desk, beside handwritten notes and a pen.
    01

    Writing and translation

Books I have authored, translated and published, and dozens of scientific and sporting articles I have printed in journals.

  2. Unbranded multi-view ink illustration of an adventure-touring motorcycle on a white ground.
    02

    Teaching

For years I have taught motorcycling — from learners who have only just set out on this path, to the instructors who will themselves go on to teach others. Fifteen years of professional cycling coaching has been another part of my teaching life.

  3. Arash in a two-tone woven hat, round glasses and a white shirt, walking with his head bowed through a bare room, window light falling on the wall beside him.
    03

    Poetry

The ghazal, qasida and rubai, the classical Persian forms, and free verse — about love, about people, the road, solitude, life, and the things ordinary conversation cannot quite find a word for.

  4. Eroded tan hills rising above a stand of dark pines under a pale sky.
    04

    Mountaineering and rock climbing

Sport has always been a fixture of my life. Mountaineering and rock climbing have gone on for years.

  5. Two adventure motorcycles and their riders stopped at a guardrail overlook under a heavy dusk sky.
    05

    Motorcycle travel

Long motorcycle journeys on the roads of Iran — from cities and villages to mountain and desert.

  6. Abstract panel of black ink and cobalt brush strokes on a pale canvas.
    06

    Calligraphy

Naghashi-khat (calligraphy-painting) panels and drawings — the result of years spent trying to find a new relationship between word, line, colour and image.

  7. Overhead still life: a film camera, small prints, the brim of a woven hat and a blank notebook on a dark blue cloth.
    07

    Photography

The camera has been with me for years, and photography taught me to look before I press the shutter. Alongside the professional work, I have taught photography for years as well.

  8. Detail of the book cover of The Motorcycle First Responder: a Red Crescent motorcycle responder in a helmet.
    08

    Red Crescent relief work

Several years of volunteer work as a relief worker with the Red Crescent Society — an experience that changes how a person sees responsibility, helping, and the value of human life.

  9. Arash Rezvani standing among pigeons in a paved plaza, in a wide-brimmed hat, hands in his pockets.
    09

    Tour guiding

I have travelled in Iran and in many countries of the world, and met many cultures and many people. Perhaps none of these experiences would have been complete without travel.

The road

Sport has always been a fixture of my life. Years of mountaineering and rock climbing, of cycling and motorcycling, and long motorcycle journeys on the roads of Iran have taught me that some things must be lived before they can be understood.

In one sentence

More than I have sought a title, I have sought to experience life in its different forms — writing, learning, creating, travelling, and returning again to the word.
