Line, light, sound

The same way of looking

Calligraphy is another form of the same way of looking.

Naghashi-khat

For me the pull of this art lies exactly on the border between word and image; where a word is sometimes seen and felt more than it is read.

A new relationship

The relationship I have been after for years is between these four things. None of them is enough on its own — the relationship is where all four say one thing together.

  1. 01

    Word

Everything begins, for me, with the word. A word has meaning before it has a shape — and no shape takes the place of that meaning.

  2. 02

    Line

The line is the word once it is seen — where the letter is not separated from its meaning, but is no longer only read.

  3. 03

    Colour

Colour is what the word does not have on its own. Something that is not read, and changes the meaning all the same.

  4. 04

    Image

A panel has to be seen as an image — before anyone sets out to read it.

Photography

For me a good photograph is not only a beautiful image; it is part of a memory, an experience, or a story that can bring the same feeling back to life years later.

Music

Music, for me, is the continuation of the same story; only this time it is sound and melody that speak, instead of pen and camera.
